Interludes Hotel Scarborough
Futurist & Spa theatres . . .
If you have come to this page directly from a search engine please note
this is NOT the official website for either of these theatres.
Futurist Theatre
Constructed as a cinema to the designs of Frank Tugwell and opened as a cinema
on 27 June 1921, the Futurist was remodelled in 1958 as a theatre. The new stage
occupied the site, and incorporates part of the structure, of the Arcadia / Palladium
Theatre (the proscenium arch of the old theatre forms the side wall of the Futurist
stage). |

Summer Seasons of big name stars and companies (The Black & White Minstrels were
resident for several years) kept the theatre busy for many years and even now star
concerts (Steps, Daniel O' Donnel, David Essex etc.) can result in the 'full house' boards.
In 1968 it was extended and redesigned again. Now operated by Barrie Stead (who also runs the Hollywood Plaza cinema in the town) it seats 2,155 making it the 6th largest theatre outside London. The Futurist presents a Summer Season
of live shows with (mainly) one night concerts during the rest of the year although weeks
of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "Girls Night Out", and "Blood Brothers"
were presented in 1998. When there is no live show then films are shown in the UK's largest
remaining single screen cinema. |
Spa Theatre
Designed as the Floral Lounge and adapted into a theatre at a late stage of building, the Spa
Theatre has entertained Scarborough audiences since 1880. Designed by the London
firm of Verity and Hunt (Comedy & Criterion Theatres in London) it seats 630
divided between stalls, balcony & slips and is at first & second floor level,
sharing foyer, box office and bars with the Spa Grand Hall. It currently presents
the longest summer season show in the U.K. and is the headquarters of the National
Student Drama Festival. |
