Yorkshire is a particularly rich and innovative region for theatre. In addition
to the Stephen Joseph, Futurist and Spa theatres in Scarborough, the following
are the major theatres within an approximately 90 minute journey. For matinee
performances in Bradford, Hull, Leeds and York there are direct rail links
from Scarborough. Why not combine a few days on the coast, when visiting the
Stephen Joseph Theatre, with a visit to a performance or two out of town.
BRADFORD

Built 1914 completely refurbished 1986 with extended stage and foyers. Stalls,

Small 500 seat attractive late Victorian theatre in town centre. Stalls, circle
and small balcony with bars on each level. Theatre Cafe Bar 10.00am - 6.00pm
for coffee and snacks - drinks only after 6.00pm. Small studio theatre at top
of building. Own adventurous productions and some touring productions.

Medium sized (1,200 seats in stalls and circle) touring house opened in 1939.

Hull Truck |
Opened in 1970 and recently extended, this is the home of the Hull
Truck Theatre Company famous for the plays of its artistic director John Godber
as well as other new, often challenging drama. Thrust stage in a small
auditorium on one level. Bar. Secure car park behind the theatre.
As part of a new development in central Hull, construction has begun on a new theatre for Hull Truck. It will be finished in 2008.

LEEDS

Leeds Grand Theatre |
Large spectacularly ornate touring house seating 1,550 on four levels (stalls,
dress circle, upper circle and balcony) plus around twenty boxes. Bars on each
level. The home of Opera North. Built in 1878 and due for a refurbishment.

W Yorks Playhouse : Quarry
W Yorks Playhouse : Courtyard

Built in 1990, the Playhouse contains two theatres. The Quarry seats 700 on a
single steeply raked tier and has an enormous open stage. The Courtyard seats
350 most of which are on a steeply raked bank with two shallow balconies
housing the rest - note that the side balconies can sometimes have poor
sightlines. Mainly own productions, the standard is very high and has led to
the theatre being dubbed the National Theatre of the North. Excellent busy
foyers with large bar & buffet - open all day (dinner plus theatre packages
available Friday & Saturday). Large adjacent car park. |

RICHMOND

Fascinating Georgian theatre built in 1788 and restored in 1963. Good theatre
museum. Touring productions in a shoe-box sized theatre seating just 220 with
two balconies. Tiny foyer - the box office is open 1-30pm - 4-30pm. Small bar
and coffee bar. Theatre tours available. Close to historic town centre.

YORK

York Theatre Royal |
Mainly a producing theatre in the centre of the city. Beautiful auditorium
seating 863 divided between stalls, dress circle, upper circle and balcony with
benches! 6 boxes. Bars at stalls and dress circle levels. Cafe bar for snacks,
coffee or full meals at ground and dress circle level in a 1967 excellent
contempory extension - the theatre dates from 1744 with many alterations - the
auditorium largely dates from a 1902 rebuild.
Some touring shows but mainly own excellent productions - the Summer musical
just gets better and better and the long running pantomime is legendary! |
York Opera House |
Edwardian touring and concert house built in 1902, and restored after many
years disuse in 1989, in the city centre. Pretty auditorium seating 1,030 in
stalls, dress and upper circles plus boxes. Bars on each level. Part of the
Clear Channel group. |

are other theatres
in Bridlington (Spa), Filey (Evron Centre), Whitby (Spa), York (Joseph Rowntree
and Art Centre) and Pickering (Kirk) which are open on a more limited basis.
